Hearing Aid Care & Maintenance

Regular care and maintenance of your hearing aid will help keep it working properly and may prevent the need for repairs. The following are some key points to consider when caring for your hearing aid.

  • Always carry a spare battery: batteries usually last 5-10 days, depending on usage.
  • Batteries should be kept at room temperature: do NOT store them in the refrigerator.
  • Put the battery in your hearing aid correctly: check proper orientation before inserting.
  • Do not buy more than a 6-months supply: beyond this time period, batteries may become stale.
  • Do not use corroded batteries.
  • Properly dispose of dead or corroded batteries.
  • Batteries are poisonous: keep them away from small children or pets.

Earmold (for behind-the-ear style hearing aids only)

  • Check for wax in the earmold every day: to remove wax, use the wax removal tool provided with your hearing aids.
  • Wash your earmold regularly:
    • remove the earmold from the hearing aid and wash in warm soapy water (hand soap or dishwashing liquid). NEVER immerse the hearing aid!
    • Run water through the earmold tubing.
    • Use the blower tool provided to remove moisture.
    • Allow the earmold to dry overnight before reattaching it to the hearing aid.
    • Do not reattach the earmold to the hearing aid until the earmold is COMPLETELY DRY, inside and out. Do not use a microwave, oven or hair dryer to dry the earmold.
